Lately, you have been having this feeling of doom, you feel as if the weight of the world is on your shoulder, you can’t sleep, you eat all the wrong food, you keep on having daily headaches with chest pain but your doctor ran all kinds of tests and found nothing! That my friend is the manifestation of stress. Which is now all too common during the COVID19 pandemic.
The manifestations of stress
Stress manifests in many ways and it is certainly not all mental and emotional. Stress begins in the mind—mainly in our thoughts and in how we interpret and process issues, conflict, and any changes in our environment. However, when stress becomes chronic—and overwhelming—there are systems in the body that are affected. For many people, a phenomenon occurs where emotions are essentially released onto the body. There is an adaptive function for this—a survival mechanism in action—because when emotional stress becomes too much to cope with, and potentially debilitating, people employ various coping mechanisms, such as denying the stressor, implementing distractions from stress (whether healthy or unhealthy), or ignoring it entirely. However, the effects of stress are still very present, brewing in the background. Denial, distractions, and ignoring also mean that it’s likely that you’re not making any of the necessary changes to your life to decrease stress. So, stress is pushed aside, out of your mental awareness, so you can function in your everyday life—so that you’re not mentally dragged down by it. The body then takes on what the mind won’t deal with. This happens in the form of body aches, upset stomach, chest pain, and palpitations. This is the body’s way of communicating; of letting you know that stress is overwhelming—that your mind and body need self-care.
What to do?
Understand that you can only control what is within your reach. Whether you voted or not you cannot change the election results. Whether you are black or white you cannot change the level of tensions currently happening in our society. Whether the sun comes up or not is not within your control. Whether it rains all day long is not within your control. No matter how much you worry you cannot get rid of the pandemic. Manage stress by creating a schedule for your daily activities and follow it. You can care for yourself through voluntary regulated breathing practices, meditations, routine prayer, bible reading, self-help books, good quality vitamins and supplements, exercise, and healthy eating.
